Zen Utrecht began not with a business plan, but with a question: What if yoga could return to what it was meant to be? Not a workout trend or a flexibility contest, but a genuine practice of presence and self-discovery.

In 2019, our founder spent six months studying traditional yoga in Rishikesh. What struck her most wasn't the advanced asanas or the exotic location. It was how differently yoga felt when stripped of Western commercialization. There was no pressure to perform, no mirrors reflecting judgment, no comparison with others on nearby mats.

Building something different

When she returned to Utrecht, the contrast was jarring. Studios felt more like gyms. Classes felt rushed. The emphasis had shifted from inner work to outer appearance.

So we decided to build something different. A studio that honors the depth of yoga's heritage while remaining accessible to modern practitioners. No intimidation. No exclusivity. Just honest practice.

Our teaching philosophy

We train our instructors not just in technique, but in the art of seeing students as individuals. Each person who walks through our door carries their own history, their own limitations, their own reasons for being here.

Some come seeking stress relief. Others want to heal from injury. Some are curious about meditation but don't know where to start. We meet each person where they are, without pushing them toward where we think they should be.

The space we've created

Our studio on Oudegracht was chosen carefully. We wanted a location that felt removed from the city's bustle yet remained accessible. The practice room faces east, catching morning light. We kept the original wooden beams and brick walls, adding only what served the practice.

You won't find rows of machines or walls of mirrors. Instead, there's space to breathe. Space to move without bumping into others. Space to rest when your body asks for it.

What guides our work

Three principles shape everything we do:

These aren't just words we put on our website. They inform which teachers we hire, how we structure classes, what we charge, how we communicate. When we face a decision, we return to these principles.

Who we serve

Our students range from complete beginners to practitioners with decades of experience. What they share is curiosity and a willingness to show up honestly.

We've designed our offerings to accommodate this range. Some classes focus on fundamentals, perfect for new practitioners. Others explore more advanced techniques for those ready to deepen their practice.

Looking forward

We're not interested in rapid expansion or franchise opportunities. Our goal isn't to become the biggest yoga studio in Utrecht. It's to remain a place where people can practice authentically, without pretense or pressure.

As long as we can maintain that quality of space and attention, we're content. This work matters too much to let it become just another business chasing growth metrics.

If this approach resonates with you, we'd love to welcome you to a class. Come as you are. We'll take it from there.
